Senior Specialist and Manufacturing Engineer Sam Jacey is one of those veterans who successfully transitioned to full-time in Devens a little over a year ago after completing a Department of Defense Careers Skills Program (CSP) internship in partnership with BMS.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the last six months of my service, the CSP allowed me to do a BMS internship,\u201d said Sam. \u201cThis was while I was still serving and getting full military benefits. I got experience that led to a full-time job while doing meaningful work that was impactful to the business. It was a win-win all around and I can\u2019t say enough good things about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sophia Mellissinos, a BMS Talent Acquisition Partner who has been recruiting for the Devens biologics team for just over a year now, concurs with Sam\u2019s assessment on the smooth transition and good fit for veterans within the Devens environment and culture.<\/p>\n

Versatility in Roles and Experiences<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to veterans, there\u2019s not a \u2018one size fits all\u2019 type of transition,\u201d Sophia said. \u201cIt depends on their role in the military, be it project management, manufacturing based, or warehouse, logistics or supply chain skills. In Sam\u2019s case, he had an engineering background, and he performed an investigations role within cell therapy, then transferred to biologics. There are lots of opportunities, depending on what the individual is looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just like Sam transitioned from a military engineering role to one within biologics, BMS Devens welcomes individuals from many different backgrounds to apply. \u201cThe great thing about roles in Devens is that they are very cross-functional,\u201d said Sophia. \u201cOur people get a lot of exposure to different functions through their day-to-day work.\u201d That same cross-functionality opens the door to someone who might have not previously considered a career in biologics, Sam being one of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned that there\u2019s more to the biotech industry than people in lab coats doing lab work,\u201d said Sam. \u201cAnd I realized that there are so many different ways to apply so many different skillsets \u2013 all on this one campus. To me, that\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Personalizing a Career Path with Flexible Schedules<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Flexibility is available not just in career choices but in the schedule veterans opt for as well. Being a biologics manufacturing facility, there are plenty of different options for how and when one works.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sophia shared a few: \u201cFor candidates looking for a Monday to Friday, seven to three or eight to four shift, there are opportunities in our single-use facility,\u201d she said. \u201cFor people who prefer a 12-hour rotating shift, three days a week, we have that too, and other options in between.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a large, well-established company, BMS has a very competitive benefits package,\u201d said Sam. \u201cAnd coming out of the military, where I wasn\u2019t used to private insurance coverage, our HR partners made it very easy for me. I had a lot of questions and the benefits team made it easy to understand, easy to find doctors and dentists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a large military and veteran-related community in the greater Devens area, due to the Fort Devens military base,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve done some volunteering at the veterans lunch and it\u2019s right here in the community, so we don\u2019t have to go far to make an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2022, BMS was #1 on the Military Times Best for Vets Employer List, due to our commitment to supporting veterans, transitioning military members and reservists in building successful careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you get involved in a PBRG, you\u2019re getting exposure to people at different sites on different levels,\u201d Sophia added. \u201cThey\u2019re not location specific, and they\u2019re a great way to meet people and network where you\u2019re not just talking about work. And once I got involved in talent acquisition at BMS, I felt it had a real startup feel to it, and I mean that in a good way. You\u2019re getting asked for feedback. You might have an opportunity to contribute that\u2019s a bit outside your scope. And that makes the work exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
